Wrap up this week.

Friday is gone now. I just finished working. The final moment, I have registered at an international conference in Brazil. It is just for attending, I will not provide any presentations. Anyways, that is one of job I wanted to do it.

What have I done this week? Am I productive? Maybe. This week, I started analyzing the proposals submitted to our instrument. In total, almost 200 proposals were submitted to the instrument. Now I can start working on seeing the details. After some discussion with my colleagues, I think we have many ways to look at it. Af first, I would like to see the success rate of the proposal. Maybe I guess 30% or so. But I can now see how many proposals have been approved. Then, I can take a look at how many proposals have been performed. So, I can look at the number of publications to see how many publications come from that. I should see it. Interestingly, there are some other experiments that could come without the proposal system, such as mail-in proposals. That means users can send the sample to the instrument scientists to measure since the data should be needed for publication. Some say that the success rate (experiments to publications) could be higher. That makes sense. But we usually rely on the proposal system. So usually our process is like submission -> technical reviews -> Scientific reviews -> advisory committee approved -> experiments at instruments. We hoped that the system can bring us better and also fair results. Let’s see how it turns out.

Also, we are having the reporting season in the Australian Share market. I can see the positive or negative result in both but the market reacts their own ways of course. I want to take a closer look at this weekend to see how my shares are doing. I will think about what to do about it in the long term. Also, I have learned these days, selling shares is not a good idea for me because I lost so many opportunities the shares go up. I should be an investor, not a trader. I need to have the gut to stick to shares I have invested.

Anyways, what are the other thoughts? I also got a review request for a revised manuscript for a physics journal. I am happy to do it to have a better understanding of physics. Luckily I have some time now. Also, I was invited to several invited talks in Taiwan and Japan online, I am happy to do it. By talking to more people and presence on social should be good. Although, preparing the presentation could be time-consuming. I am expecting at least 3-4 presentations by the end of the year, hopefully, all give me a chance to improve my presentation skills.

Sydney’s COVID situation is still not good. Now we have a discussion on how we operate the scientific program. Just we need to see what we can do. Also, my vaccination could be coming soon. Hope I don’t have any problem while I go through the vaccination process. Just stick to what I can do. Now it is Friday night, let’s have nice food and beer, and finish the week…..
